Frisco Taking Extended Liquor Hours Proposal To Voters
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - Last call may come later in Frisco. A decision Monday night could lead to bars staying open until 2 a.m.
This isn't the first time the extended liquor hours have been proposed in Frisco, but a lot has changed since the proposal was previously on the ballot. The population boom of some 40,000 has been the biggest change.
The increased population and growing nightlife has neighborhood bar and restaurant owners pleading for the extra hours of business.
Owners have tried to make the Frisco Bar & Grill a nice place where people like to go and hang out.
Manager Scott Hunter would be happy to have patrons at the bar and tables long after the clock strikes 12. "Everyone leaves here at midnight when the bars close. [They then] travel just south 121 to the Plano area and they can drink until 2 a.m."
Over at Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill, owner Ryan Fairbanks has the same experience. He said, "They drive five minutes south to Plano and continue drinking."
Right now in Frisco, cut off happens at the stroke of midnight -- Sunday through Friday. Shutdown time on Saturday is 1 a.m.
But the city council listened to public comments for hours Monday night, and decided this November is the time to once again let voters decide on whether or not to extend the hours for alcohol sales.
Frisco resident Jo Hoper told CBS 11 News, "There is something special about Frisco and not having 2:00 a.m. alcohol sales in this area is something that makes us unique."
Back in 2008 residents turned down the proposal. But Hunter says change is inevitable. "They make that argument for years and it's not one I necessarily agree with. Plano is all about families too."
Big developers, including the Dallas Cowboys want the measure to pass, so patrons will stay in Frisco and spend money on alcohol there, instead of somewhere else.
Between now and November the city council expects to hear public debate for and against the proposal.
