Frisco Residents Fighting Proposed Walmart

FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - There is a prime piece of real estate at the corner of Stonebrook Parkway and FM 423 in Frisco, and Walmart wants it. The city council is expected to vote on whether or not to build the proposed big box chain at that location during a meeting on Tuesday.

But some residents are fighting back, saying that they do not like the idea of having Walmart as their neighbor.

The top concerns with placing such a large retailer in this location are traffic and noise. Neighbors said that they would prefer to see a smaller community-type store built in this spot. A big group of residents expect to attend the Frisco City Council meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, in order to plead their case.

The lot that Walmart hopes to take over is 190,000 square feet. There are three other Walmart stores within five miles of this location.

There has been a massive growth spurt in Frisco recently. New homes are being built nonstop and, just about five miles away from the proposed Walmart, the Dallas Cowboys are constructing their new headquarters.

Homeowners said that they are not opposed to the development, but feel that the new Walmart is unnecessary, as there are plenty of other grocery stores -- including the other Walmart locations -- just a short distance away. "It's going to be Super Walmart," said resident Patricia Sedam. "They are going to sell tires, open 24 hours a day. We do not need it."

When asked if a Target store would be better, Sedam said, "It might, but I don't think we need another grocery store."

But not all Frisco residents agree. "I will welcome it, just because I don't want to drive to Little Elm or The Colony to try to get to the closest Walmart," added Erika Thomas. "And when you price shop like I do, with two children, Walmart is usually the cheapest."

The City of Frisco said that it understands the concerns, and wants to hear from residents, but the city council will have the final say.
