Frisco Approves $90 Million Bond Sale To Fund Cowboys Headquarters
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - In a special Saturday meeting, the Frisco City Council approved a sale of $90 million in bonds to fund the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters and Practice Facility. It was the final step of financial approval the city needed for the massive project.
"Basically the project will pay for itself," said Frisco Mayor Maher Maso. "Obviously we'll be selling bond and the debt service will be paid through that increase revenue. Our economic development corporation and our community development corporation are both involved in this."
The new facility is expected to be an economic engine for the city. The multi-use facility will also be used by Frisco ISD and will have retail, residential and office space.
Residents who live in neighborhoods nearby say the Cowboys announcement has already had a positive impact.
"The property values are going to be unbelievable," Said Doak Witherspoon, who has lived in Frisco for more than a decade. "They [houses] are turning like crazy in our neighborhood so everybody wants to be close. It's going to be exciting."
And while many folks are excited about having the Cowboys nearby, others are concerned.
The Dean family, who lives less than a mile from the site, are huge Cowboys fans.
"First of all we were excited! We thought it would be really cool and, you know, something fun to take the children to," DeAnn Dean said. "But then as we started seeing more and more, we realized, 'Oh my goodness. This is going to be crazy."
The family uses Warren Parkway daily to get to and from Preston Road. The facility is being built at Warren Parkway and Dallas Parkway along the Dallas North Tollway.
"I think a lot of trees are going to be cut down. I think a lot of roads are going to be busier, just congestion," she said. "A lot of congestion and that's going to take the hominess of where we live and make it not so homey."
Crews are preparing the site for construction.
Construction must be complete by the 2016 NFL season, Maso said.
Families, like the Dean's, are hoping the Cowboys will be good neighbors.
An official ground breaking will take place in August.
