DECATUR (CBS 11 NEWS) - Football or Halloween? It's hard to compete with high school football. So, folks in Decatur made sure trick-or-treaters wouldn't have to compete with Friday night lights.

Decatur High School takes on Gainesville High this Friday at 7:30 p.m. This of course meant that Thursday night Halloween came early, and it wasn't a problem for most people.

"I think it's great," said Hallie Washburn, who was out trick-or-treating. "You have it a day earlier."

Even a middle school game on a Thursday night drew a big crowd. The town's high school game slated for Friday night is expected to draw about 4,000 fans.

"It's Friday night lights football in Texas. You can't not do it," dad Chad Miller said as he was out trick-or-treating with his family. "I think it's great! Its' two night for us we can go here for tonight then we can out tomorrow night."

But not everyone was onboard with the change.

"I don't think it will be as fun they have to get home early it takes the fun out of it," explains parent Pam Miller. "Whatever excuses were given I think it was the football game over Halloween."

Decatur's Police Chief Rex Hoskins says it's all about safety and that he wanted to make sure both football fans and trick-or-treaters were safe.

"Have a lot of my officers work that game. We can not provide adequate security for the kids to be out trick or treating."

According to Chief Hoskins, at least seven officers will be working the game Friday. He says on Halloween night extra officers are usually keeping an eye on kids and drivers.
