FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) — Sherrie and Ken O'Brien call the strong odor they smelled 'a rude awakening.'
The O'Briens live north of Golden Triangle Bouldevard in north Fort Worth. They said the odor was so bad Thursday morning they couldn't go outside.
"It was nauseating," Sherrie O'Brien said.
"One time and you'd never forget it," Ken O'Brien said.
They blame the smell on the Alliance Processors plant, which sits nearly a quarter of mile south of them. The plant recycles used cooking oil.
The O'Briens called the manager.
"I [asked the manager] 'Are you doing anything unusual today?'" Sherrie O'Brien said. "And he said, 'No. We're doing cleaning today.' And I said, 'The smell is significantly bad.' And, of course, he said, 'I don't know that it's from our plant.'"
The plant manager told CBS 11 they didn't do anything different Thursday than the work for which they're permitted.
The O'Briens said they've smelled the odor off and on for 20 years. Many residents agree with their complaint, they said, but others who don't live in the area tell them, "Well, that's their business. And they're trying to run a business, so let them do what they want to do."
"Some people say, 'I am sure they were here first,'" Sherrie O'Brien said. "But no; we were here first. We were here when there was nothing but cows."
The plant manager said he hasn't received other complaints.
CBS 11 called a City of Fort Worth spokeswoman Thursday afternoon to ask how many people have called to complain about the plant but have not yet heard back.
