FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Good news from the Fort Worth Police Department as officials say the city's overall crime rate is falling.

At the Monday Fort Worth city council meeting, Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald said that for the first six months of this year, the overall crime rate is down 2.4% compared to the first six months of 2015.

According to the Chief, property crimes, like burglaries and thefts, are especially down.

However, in the same time comparison, homicides have actually increased; 35 homicides have been committed in the first half of this year, up from 28 in the first half of last year.

Fitzgerald also informed council members he wants to hire nearly 100 new officers by the end of the year.
