FORT WORTH(CBSDFW.COM) -- Two Fort Worth Police Officers were honored on social media Monday afternoon after they bought a young man some new basketball shoes.

In a trending post on Facebook and Twitter this afternoon, the Fort Worth PD said Officer's Carter and Whitehead stepped up to help after discovering the young man in Como needed the new footwear. According to a Fort Worth PD twitter post in response to a Tweet from a CBS 11 producer, the officers paid for the shoes themselves.

There were several comments online from citizens praising the actions of the officer. "Congrats Fort Worth Police Department, your two officers are Hero's in my eyes," said Facebook user Peggy Davis. "This is the 'blue' that I back," said William Bartram.

On Twitter, user Brandon Smith said, "This is beautiful. Thank you @FortWorthPD! Always making residents proud!"

Social media was also abuzz with other Fort Worth PD related news Monday.

A fundraiser for an officer who was shot in the line of duty earlier this month received some traffic.  The event offers the public a chance to show support for Officer Matthew Pearce by visiting one of a number of participating Chick-Fil-A restaurants to buy t-shirts to raise money for his family.

The t-shirts are for sale Monday, March 28 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurants will donate 20 percent of sales during that time to the Pearce family. Find a list of participating restaurants here.
