FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A Tarrant County jury convicted and then sentenced a Fort Worth man to 80 years in prison for "assaulting a family member by impeding the victim's breathing."

Christopher Patrick Farr, a known member of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, also has a record of multiple prior drug-related offenses.

The Tarrant County DA's office says in October 2015, Farr was assaulting his then-girlfriend at his home when neighbors alerted police.

When officers got there, police say Farr had choked his girlfriend into unconsciousness and he was taken into custody.

Investigators learned Farr had been holding the victim as a virtual hostage in his home for a week.

"Choking is a clear escalation on the part of the attacker," said prosecutor Tim Rodgers. "He wasn't intending to scare her, or to hurt her, he had the clear intent of endangering or taking her life.
"So often citizens are afraid to intervene when it comes to domestic violence, and it is to the credit of Farr's neighbors that they alerted the police to the situation. This victim very likely owes them her life."
