Fort Worth Man Admits To Smothering His Elderly Mother

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - An arrest affidavit states that a Fort Worth man charged with murder in the death of his mother told investigators that he smothered the 85-year-old woman with duct tape and his hand.
On the afternoon of August 31st, Kenneth Edward Baker called 911 telling dispatchers that he had killed his mother.
Police responded to the call on Heritage Lane near Sheffield Drive in south Fort Worth at 3 p.m.
The 50-year-old Baker answered the door and indicated to homicide detectives that he killed Margaret Shelton because she was belligerent and accusatory. Police say the woman had the onset of dementia or Alzheimer's.
"She was a good neighbor, very caring, watched out for everyone, always trying to help someone do something," neighbor Danny Messick said.
Another neighbor said they heard the woman arguing with someone. "I kept hearing her say 'get away from me, get away from me,'... you could tell they were in a very heated argument, about what I don't know. I couldn't hear from across the street."
Homicide Detective E.C. Pate says, "The victim fought and resisted his efforts to kill her."
Police say the victim's dog was also found dead in the garage and Baker told investigators that he also killed the pet.
Kenneth Baker remains in the Tarrant County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
