FORT WORTH (KRLD-AM) - Back in May, Debbie and Shaun Riddle of Fort Worth lost their two-month-old daughter, Glory, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The following month, as the couple dined at the West Side Cafe, their waitress, Kayla Lane, 22, asked them where Glory was, and the couple told them what happened.

Debbie says what happened next floored her and her husband.

"She paid out of her own pocket for our meal," she says.

Kayla says gestures like that are par for the course among the restaurant staff.

"The waitresses do it, some hosts do it, the cafe does it," says Kayla.

After learning that many people who work at West Side Cafe, including Kayla, do so to put themselves through college, the Riddles started a GoFundMe campaign to help them out.

But after an initial spike, the donations have stopped, with the last one coming four months ago.

"We were looking to start off with four scholarships of $4000 each," Debbie says. "And so far, we've raised a little more than $3,000, not even enough for the first scholarship."

Lane, who works at West Side Cafe to earn money to attend UT-Arlington, says the money would come in very handy.

"It would take a huge load off of our shoulders knowing that we have some college paid for," Lane says.

Shaun Riddle says Lane and the rest of the West Side staff have become family since her gesture.

"As these people are trying to serve and make an impact towards the girls at West Side, they're making an impact on us with their generosity," Shaun says.
