Former Texas Police Chief Gets Probation In Records Case

BROWNSVILLE (AP) — A former South Texas police chief must serve five years of probation for falsifying records to try to get firearms certification for his staff.
Ex-Indian Lake police Chief John Chambers was sentenced Thursday in Brownsville. Chambers earlier this month was convicted on 14 counts of tampering with government records in a January 2015 case.
Prosecutors say Chambers, who was arrested last February and resigned the next month, created false entries in government records for officers to obtain required firearms credentials.
Ex-Officer Alfredo Avalos testified that Chambers ordered him to make false entries on the firearms documents.
A judge sentenced Chambers to two years in state jail, then suspended the jail term and ordered five years of probation. Chambers must also pay court costs and do 350 hours of community service.
