PLANO(CBSDFW.COM) - For those who have to go back to work Tuesday, there are ways to safely navigate over icy roads.

With 30 years experience, Darrel Pierre knows how to fix cars and how to drive them.  The Plano body shop owner and former race driver says the first rule to keep from losing control.

"Drive in lower gears because on ice, brakes give cars and trucks the shakes," says Pierre. "If you have anti-lock brakes, don't release the brake stay on the brakes let the anti-lock unit work."

Pierre says many drivers think they are turning on traction control by pushing buttons like this when they are actually turning it off.

When a vehicle starts to slide turn in the same direction as the rear and drive well worn lanes if possible.  "You want to try to follow the vehicle in front of you put your tire in the rut the vehicle in front of you is creating," says Pierre.
