FootGolf Brings Fresh Players To Texas Courses
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It seems as soccer becomes more popular in the U.S. the game of golf is on a decline. But some North Texas golf clubs may have found the answer to bring fresh players out to the course. Their goal is to get people back in the swing of the sport.
At the Meadowbrook Park Golf Course in Arlington there are nine holes on the fairway. Nine of those are for traditional golf and another nine for FootGolf - a hybrid game that's changing up the old school sport.
The objective is the same. Tee off. Put the ball in the hole. But in FootGolf the only 'clubs' needed are your two feet.
Trevor Greenberg told CBS 11 News, "It looks like a lot of fun!"
At Lake Park Golf Club in Lewisville, Greenberg and his golfing buddies were excited to test their skills.
Club manager Sean Swanberg said FootGolf has been an extremely popular addition to the traditional course.
"Its bringing soccer players, families and teams out that would normally not be introduced to golf."
FootGolf is a fast-paced game that cuts down on some of the typical golf frustrations. "That's the number one thing. It's [traditional golf] expensive and it takes a long time to play," Swanberg said.
Meadowbrook Park just added FootGolf last week. Chip Taylor works at Meadowbrook Park. "I haven't seen as many people excited and laughing and having the fun as they were on this golf course in the year that I've been here."
Taylor said FootGolf makes good business sense at a time when the industry is slowing down. "I've had some people say they think it's [golf decline] because Tiger's not playing well that we don't have the audience that we did."
But if a soccer ball can introduce golf to new players, the friends on the Lewisville course see it as a hole in one. Golfer Ryan Taylor said, "Hopefully this can bring the younger generation to play golf, because they see it through playing FootGolf."
