Football: Guyer, Allen Face Off In Denton
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Allen Eagles picked a fitting place to kick off their football season – UNT's Apogee Stadium.
The team will play the entire season on the road due to cracks at the concrete in the district's $60 million dollar football stadium.
"Every game is an away game and that is why we are bringing back the spirit paint and trying to boost everyone's morale a little bit," said Allen High School fan, Julie Cucumber.
But Apogee Stadium is as large, even larger than Allen's and it's three years old, too. Ironically, the university's mascot is also an Eagle.
Allen fans turned road warriors, will caravan 45 minutes away to Denton since cracked concrete made the city's mecca of Friday night lights go dark. Some students admit the drive is a drag.
"I'm disappointed that they spent $60 million on a stadium that is supposed to be the best in the whole country and it had cracks," said Allen High School student, Hunter Pasmore.
Fans plan to yell louder and show up in greater numbers to compensate for the loss of home field advantage.
"I'm kind of excited about it because when we go on the road the people who really want to be there go it's a lot of fun the energy is totally different," said Alycia Segner.
By the time the Eagles ran onto the field, Allen's fan support rivaled Dentons; a sign that while there may be cracks in Allen's stadium, there's no sign of cracks in the team's support.
