Flash flooding, cooler temperatures start the work week in North Texas

Cold front settles into North Texas

NORTH TEXASPockets of heavy rain fell across Dallas-Fort Worth Monday morning.

Flash flood warnings and advisories were in effect for Dallas County and surrounding southern counties as the rain moved in. The cold front slowed down in the morning and at times there were high rainfall rates that led to flash flooding concerns in parts of the metroplex.

CBS News Texas meteorologists issued a weather alert due to the heavy rain in the morning hours. Over 12 hours, between 1.5" and 6" of rain fell. Nearly 3" of rain fell in parts of the metroplex in over an hour and a half Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rain in Dallas County fell along and north of I-20 between Duncanville and Balch Springs. The heaviest rain fell in Ellis County east of Midlothian to Waxahachie, or between and along US-67 and I-35E.

As the cold front and rain moved across North Texas, temperatures dropped to the mid-60s.

The front will stall to the south, making for a 30% to 40% chance of showers and some storms in the early morning hours on Tuesday in the south sides of North Texas.

The rain chances continue Wednesday morning thanks to another front sliding into North Texas, keeping high temperatures in the 80s. However, all eyes are looking forward to the opening of the State Fair of Texas – there might need to be a Plan B as an upper-level low pressure looks to bring rain and some storms into the forecast.

The low pressure will also be influenced by what looks to be potential tropical system Helene developing in the Gulf of Mexico. There is the possibility that Helene and an area of low pressure over Arkansas will get into a pattern where they rotate around each other, called the Fujiwhara effect.

It could extend a period of clouds and rain through the opening weekend of the State Fair of Texas, but it is too early to make that call on Monday. However, expect a 7-day forecast period of temperatures back to Fall with highs staying in the 80s.
