GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) – A violent crash claimed the life of a young father and his two-year-old son in Garland. It happened late Monday night on Interstate 30.
Police say a wreck on I-30 backed up traffic, forcing the Shumpert family's SUV to slow down. Police say a larger SUV slammed into the family's vehicle.
"Both vehicles ended up catching on fire. Police and fire got here. They were able to get both drivers out of the vehicles. They were transported to hospitals inside Dallas," said Joe Harn from the Garland Police Department.
Laura Shumpert was driving and has been taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment. Her husband 28-year-old Jarred Schumpert and 2-year-old son Lyndon died in the fiery crash.
The family is from Missouri, and police think they were traveling through the area for the holidays.
Jarred played football for Southwest Baptist University in Missouri and those connected to that program sent their condolences on social media:
The driver that caused the crash was taken to Baylor in Dallas, and is expected to be OK. Police say alcohol was not a factor, but the driver was speeding. A grand jury will determine if charges should be filed against the driver in this case.
