DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A crash involving a big rig shut down a major freeway in Dallas on Thursday morning, and resulted in a fire and a fuel spill. The incident took place at about 1:50 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate-30, near Lawnview Avenue.

According to officials at the scene, a tractor trailer carrying produce hit a barrier wall after a tire blew out. That impact caused the vehicle to catch on fire, spilling diesel fuel and food onto the roadway in the process.

The driver was able to get out safely, but the interstate had to be closed.

Firefighters were called to put out the flames and crews had to clean up debris that scattered all over the freeway. Also, a hazardous materials team was brought in to deal with the fuel spill. A tow truck pulled the big rig away from the crash site.

The highway closure created traffic backups in the overnight hours, but lanes started to open again just before the rush hour got underway. Check the traffic map for further updates and alternate routes.
