Federal Hearing To Resume On Texas Oil Spill
GALVESTON (AP) - Federal investigators are trying to find out what happened when a tugboat steering two barges collided with a cargo freighter in the Houston Ship Channel in March, rupturing a tank and spilling nearly 170,000 gallons of oil into the busy waterway and the Gulf of Mexico.
A panel of Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board officials is taking a second day of testimony Tuesday in Galveston. They're scheduled to hear from the captain of the tug and pilot of the freighter.
A pilot from the tug said Monday his more experienced captain voluntarily took over the wheel a few minutes before the accident and had been briefed on nearby vessels and foggy weather.
No one was hurt but spilled oil was detected some 200 miles down the Texas coastline.
