Experts: Gulf Oil Spill Won't Affect Gas Prices
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Things were as close to normal Wednesday since a barge spilled up to 170,000 gallons of oil into the Houston Ship Channel.
The ship channel is fully open again and according to experts, the oil spill shouldn't have too much effect on gas prices. Two of the nations biggest refineries were cut off from receiving oil shipments while the channel was closed.
However, since the closure lasted a few days, Exxon's refinery and marathon petroleum's refinery said they haven't had to slow production.
"I suspect we'll get more in however I think we're doing pretty good so far," said Merrell Skipper, Bay Area Wildlife Rehabilitation.
Energy Analysts also said gas prices are going up anyway, as refineries change to the required summer gasoline blend.
The Galveston Island Ferry is fully operational, too. But TxDOT has advised people using the ferry to remain in their cars since there's still oil in the water.
