Expert Shares Holiday Travel Safety Tips

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Millions of Texans are getting ready to visit loved ones for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are heading out this weekend, expect very busy roads. Before you get behind the wheel, there are some things that you can do to make sure that you arrive safely.

Sgt. Lonny Haschel with the Texas Department of Public Safety shared these holiday travel safety tips.

  • Watch your surroundings.
  • Give yourself some extra time and slow down.
  • Check the condition of your vehicle.
  • Prepare a road safety kit. (Video)
  • Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Make sure that child safety seats are installed correctly. (Video)
  • Be careful where you drive and park on Black Friday.
  • Stop by an ATM before hitting the road.

The weather may also make holiday travel a bit tricky, even if you are only going a short distance. Rain is expected throughout the weekend in North Texas. Check out Scott Padgett's weather forecast and plan your trip accordingly.

AAA Texas said that roughly 3.4 million Texans will be traveling 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving holiday. That is an increase from last year. Lower gas prices are partially responsible for the jump in travel.
