UPDATE: Mexican officials confirmed Wednesday evening Tonya Couch was deported to L.A. Ethan Couch remains in Guadalajara for now.
HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Houston office of U.S. Marshals says they have no idea now when Ethan Couch and his mother will return to the U.S.
The pair have retained counsel in Mexico and filed paperwork to stop deportation.
Couch filed a writ of amparo in Mexico. Essentially it allows someone to challenge the legality of being detained
U.S. Marshals hope the pair will eventually be flown directly to DFW, rather than into Houston.
It's expected to be at least two weeks or possibly months before the pair is brought back to DFW.
Meantime, CBS11 received a statement from the Couches attorneys back in North Texas.
Below is a statement sent to me from Scott and Reagan Wednesday afternoon.
Scott Brown and Wm. Reagan Wynn say:
"We represent Ethan concerning his juvenile matter in Tarrant County, Texas. We are not licensed to practice law in the United Mexican States (Mexico).
Accordingly, we do not represent Mr. Couch in any legal matter in Mexico. We do not represent Tonya Couch in any capacity.
We do not have any additional information concerning this matter to provide at this time.
CBS11 also received a statement from Fred Couch's attorney Lance Evans:
Fred Couch has been cooperating with officials from the Tarrant County District Attorneys Office and the U.S. Marshals Service in their search for Ethan. He is very appreciative of efforts by these and other agencies to safely locate his son. Because of Ethan's pending legal issues, Mr. Couch will have no additional comment at this time.
