STEPHENVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - It's been a difficult past week for the Erath County Sheriff's Department.

Two deputies are fighting for their lives for two different reasons.

Sergeant Cody Keith was diagnosed with stage 3 Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma cancer and Deputy Dustin Paulsen was involved in a very serious crash while on duty.

Deputy Paulsen suffered internal injuries and broken bones after being in a head-on crash while on duty just after midnight last Friday morning.

Chief Deputy Jason Upshaw says both Sgt. Keith and Deputy Paulsen are young, married men with children.

The Sheriff's Department has set up donation accounts at First Financial Bank both deputies.

Both Sgt. Keith and Deputy Paulsen are expected to be on leave for an extended period of time for their medical treatments.

Plans for a fundraising event for the pair are in the works.
