Elderly Woman Dies In Fort Worth House Fire

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - An elderly Fort Worth woman died in a house fire around 4:50 a.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of S. Hughes St.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 4:55 a.m. to find smoke and fire coming from a small, wood frame home.

When emergency crews attempted to enter the home, they found locked burglar bars on the front door.

Crews were also met by heavy "fire conditions," according to press release, but were able to get past both obstacles.

Once inside, the body of an 82-year-old woman was discovered in the home's living room. She was the only person in the house, according to FWFD spokesman Timothy Hardeman.

The woman has been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office as Eunice Middlebrook.

Hardeman said the fire started in the bedroom at the front of the residence. No smoke detectors were found inside the home.

An exact cause of death has yet to be released, and the cause of the fire also remains under investigation.
