QUITMAN (AP) — An East Texas mother must serve 40 years in prison over the 2014 deaths of her two daughters whose battered bodies were found in their home in Quitman.
Officials say Daphne Elizabeth McDaniels was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury in a plea deal in Wood County.
McDaniels originally faced two capital murder counts in the July 2014 deaths of 3-year-old Gabriella Guerrero and 1-year-old Natalye Price. An autopsy determined the girls suffered blunt force injuries.
Police found the victims when responding to a report of two children not breathing.
A man who dated McDaniels awaits trial on charges of reckless endangerment to a child and tampering with evidence.
Quitman is 80 miles east of Dallas.
