Driver Shot In Head Along Service Road In Lewisville
LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) – Police said they don't know why a man shot another driver in the head along Interstate-35E in Lewisville Tuesday night. The victim wasn't the only person the gunman threatened either.
It's the kind of bizarre plot that usually happens in Hollywood films... police said a local man was shot for simply crossing paths with a stranger who was upset.
In hindsight the shooting made sense to police. But as it unfolded, they didn't know Stephen Bielicke, 53, was reportedly upset with his ex-wife and had called her several times from local convenience store phones.
"He was upset with her and had been threatening to come over and kill her and kill the children," said Capt. Dan Rochelle of the Lewisville Police Department.
Somewhere, police said, Bielicke saw and followed Verland Johnasen, 65, and shot at his car on I-35E, according to police.
It happened in front of a hospital, and Verland was rushed inside then flown to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Then, about 45-mintues later a 911 call from another convenience store came in, where police said a man with a gun was reportedly hassling customers.
"When officers went out there they talked to the clerk who had gotten a license plate off the car...we were able to run that tag," said Capt. Rochelle.
The clerk's quick thinking led police to Bielicke. Police said evidence found by detectives and a search dog at the scene linked him to a gun found in his car.
Bielicke was charged with aggravated assault.
Verland lives on a quiet street in nearby Flower Mound, where residents were stunned to learn one of their neighbors was the victim of a bizarre crime.
"I'm shocked because they are just not the type to have anybody want to shoot them. It's really quiet around here. We talk to neighbors while we're cutting grass and talk for a minute or two but everybody's real friendly," said neighbor Pat Bollman.
