Dallas Officers Survive Oak Cliff Gun Battle
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Two police officers escaped injury early Friday morning after an Oak Cliff traffic stop led to a gun battle that left their squad car riddled with bullet holes. The incident began just after midnight in the 500 block of South Llewelyn Avenue in Dallas.
The officers attempted to pull over a vehicle, but the people inside responded violently. "The occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the officers, striking the squad car," said Sr. Corp. Sherri Jeffrey with the Dallas Police Department. Evidence suggests that at least six shots were fired at the officers. Gunshots struck their car's windshield, tire and radiator.
"Officers returned fire and the suspects fled the location," Jeffrey continued.
There was a brief chase, but the officers lost sight of the suspects after about two miles, as the squad car became disabled from the gunfire.
Neither of the officers were hurt during the exchange of bullets. It is not known if any suspects were struck by the shots that the officers fired.
The officers involved in this incident have both been on the force for just over four years. Their names have not been released.
Authorities conducted an extensive search on the ground and in the air. They were first able to locate the car. Then, a possible suspect was taken into custody at about 6:00 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Illinois Avenue. Police are still investigating this incident, and searching for additional suspects.
