DNA Leads To Arrest Of Suspected Dallas Rapist
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Police have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman as she slept in her north Dallas apartment in October.
Jasmine Simmons was taken into custody on Tuesday on charges of sexual assault. His bond has been set at $250,000.
The incident occurred at 10900 Audelia Rd. on Oct. 30, 2013. The victim told police that she was sleeping in her apartment when the suspect entered the residence and jumped on top of her, pinning down her legs.
When she screamed, the suspect covered the victim's mouth with tape and bound her wrists together. He then sexually assaulted her.
Investigators collected physical evidence inside the victim's apartment, including DNA, which was submitted into the CODIS database.
On March 31, the Texas Department of Public Safety determined that the suspect DNA matched the DNA profile of Simmons.
"We were able to take that information, plus some additional interviews with our victim, and get an arrest warrant," said Jeff Cotner of the Dallas Police Department. "We were very pleased to announce that we made this arrest."
This led to Simmons' arrest by officers from the U.S. Marshals task force and the Dallas Police Department.
The victim confirmed to police that she did not know Simmons.
At this time, Simmons has not been identified as a suspect in any additional reported sexual assaults.
