DISD Students Get Close Look At Famous Car Auction

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The 2016 Mecum Auction is in town for the next few days at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and some DISD high school students are getting to check out the fun at what has become the mother of all collectible car auctions.
The auction is hosting about 250 automotive technology students who will spend Thursday and Friday learning about the car auction business.
Jose Martinez from Skyline High School is one of those students.
Martinez said, "It's amazing all these cars. It's beautiful."
For many of the students it's the first they have ever seen anything like this auction.
The Mecum auction is expected to sell more than 1,200 cars, and officials say this year they are on pace to make more than half a billion dollars from all of their auctions in 2016.
Dave Magers, Mecum Auction CEO, was on hand to welcome the students and tell them a little bit about what he does.
Magers said, "It's nice to come and look at 12-hundred cool cars but they get an opportunity to understand how the business of collector car auctions work."
He said this field trip to come see the auction is one packed with lesson for the kids.
The auction runs through Saturday and it's open to the public. The cost of admission is $30 per person.
