DISD Needs 100 Teachers Before School Year Begins
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- With just 12 days remaining before classes begin in Dallas, the school district is scrambling to hire as many as 100 teachers.
The DISD school board is set to meet Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with the hiring of teachers at the forefront of the agenda.
Administrators are still looking for roughly 100 teachers, on top of the nearly 2,000 teaching positions already filled for the coming school year.
The teacher's union Alliance AFT warned that many teachers would be leaving the district due to policies implemented by Superintendent Mike Miles. It's unclear if that has played a role in the current shortage.
As of now, the district is facing a critical shortage of bilingual, high school math and science, and foreign language teachers.
The district currently needs 52 elementary teachers, 44 secondary teachers, five teachers who will work at all levels, and two more qualified as bilingual and special education teachers.
DISD is the second largest school district in Texas, behind only Houston.
