DISD Board Approves Teacher Pay Overhaul
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After several hours of debate, Dallas Independent School District trustees voted early Friday morning, just after midnight, to allow Superintendent Mike Miles to overhaul the way that the district evaluates teachers. The plan is called the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI), and it will change the way that the district appraises, supports and rewards its educators.
The school board's vote was 7-2.
According to school district officials, this new model replaces the long-established method of compensating school teachers based on tenure and college degrees. Rather, teachers will be rewarded for their performance, student perceptions and student achievement.
School district officials called this new system a quantum leap from the way that most educators are evaluated across the nation.
Officials stated that the strategic compensation plan gives teachers the opportunity to make more money in a shorter period of time. The salaries will range between $45,000 and $90,000. "It's a strong, fair, comprehensive evaluation system -- bold and revolutionary," said Miles. "It's going to help us define what excellent teaching looks like, and support our teachers with good professional development."
The superintendent said that the evaluation portion of this new system, and the professional development plan, starts this August. Teachers will begin getting compensating at the end of the next school year.
"I'm pleased with the vote," Miles said. "The board showed support for a rigorous, fair evaluation system."
