Dirk To Sit Out Mavs-Rockets Preseason Opener

DALLAS, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - Dirk Nowitzki was a little gimpy as he worked his way through Saturday's Fan Jam scrimmage and now we know why: He sustained what the Mavs are calling a hip contusion, an injury coach Rick Carlisle terms "not serious'' but nevertheless troublesome enough to cause the 12-time All-Star to miss Tuesday's preseason opener against the visiting Rockets.
"We've got a lot of different guys,'' Carlisle said after the Monday workout, in which Nowitzki did not participate. "It's an opportunity to look at some different things tomorrow."
Nowitzki's absence likely means an elevation in the rotation for Jae Crowder, who Carlisle said has been Dallas' second-best defender in training camp (behind center Tyson Chandler) and Al-Farouq Aminu, who is otherwise slated to be a backup 3.
