DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Dirk Nowitzki signed a two-year deal this summer with the intention of fulfilling the contract. However, an Achilles injury and the mounting losses have him at least considering hanging up his sneakers after this season.

From AFP, via Yahoo Sports:

"If things don't go so well and it hurts everywhere, it could be that 2017 will be the end," the forward told German magazine Sport Bild.

"Actually, my plan is to complete the 20 years and play for Dallas until 2018.

"But just because I have signed a two-year contract doesn't automatically mean that I will play for two years. It could happen next year."

If Nowitzki sticks around for the 2017-2018 season he'll join Kobe Bryant as the only players in NBA history to have ever played 20 seasons with one team.

I'd bet on Nowitzki playing one more year, but as you can tell from his words it's certainly not a given.

The Mavericks are tied with the Philadelphia 76ers for last place in the NBA with a record of 6-18. Dallas is getting healthy, however, and has now won three out of their last six games.

Nowitzki remains out indefinitely with the Achilles injury that has limited him to only five games this season.
