Dirk Doubts Mavs Can Land Carmelo

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Rumors have surfaced that Carmelo Anthony would consider a move to Dallas. Dirk Nowitzki has endorsed the idea.

But does the Mavs' 12-time All-Star think it might actually happen?

"Not really," said Nowitzki on Friday while practicing for his charity baseball event. "Somebody in his camp -- he brought up the Mavericks first. It's not like we brought him up. If we're actually on his radar, then it's great. We obviously have to look at it."

The Mavs can create up to $31 million in cap space on July 1, leaving plenty of room for a player of Anthony's caliber. But the team's primary focus will be resigning Nowitzki himself, who is set to become a free agent.

"We'll just meet July 1 when it's legal, and hopefully we'll get a deal done pretty quickly," said Dirk. "I think we all know that's what needs to happen. Both parties want the same thing; we just need to find a middle ground for me to feel respected and for the franchise to still have enough cap room left to do some good things this summer."

Last offseason, the Mavs added key pieces in Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon. Both guys remain under contract and will likely return next season, providing continuity in the team's backcourt.

Adding a key player in next week's draft might prove to be difficult, as Dallas is without a first round pick. The team instead will have two selections in the second round.

But the team has made surprising moves in the past, a fact that's not lost on Nowitzki.

"I learned with Mark and Donnie that anything is possible. We've pulled deals off over the length of my career that nobody saw coming within a couple of hours. They made something happen."

So can the Mavs bring in the guy Nowitzki deems "one of the most explosive scorers that we have in this league"?

"Anything's possible with those two guys."
