Deputy Shoots Prisoner In DFW Airport Bathroom

UPDATE (February 14, 2014) The names of the two Oklahoma deputies transporting a prisoner through Dallas Fort Worth Airport have been released.

29-year-old Deputy John Werts, is the officer who shot prisoner Brent Taff in the hand while he tried to escape.

The other deputy that tackled Taff has he tried to escape is, 53-year-old Susan Nye.

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM)  - An Oklahoma deputy shot the prisoner he was transporting at DFW Airport Friday evening.

The shooting happened in Terminal C, inside a men's bathroom before 6 pm.

The Tulsa County Sheriff's Deputy, shot the prisoner, later identified as Brent Taff, in the hand, while the two were in the bathroom.  Taff "rapidly exited the bathroom stall and began assaulting" the deputy who had entered the bathroom with him, according to a statement released from the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.  Taff was able to hit the deputy several times before the deputy grabbed his gun and fired at Taff several times.

A second deputy, who was also transporting Taff, was able to chase and tackle him after he escaped the bathroom.  Taff  was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition.  The deputy, who has not been identified, was taken to a different hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Taff, was being transported by two deputies from Moab, Utah back to Tulsa for an outstanding warrant for threatening a violent act against a Tulsa County District Judge.  They were on a layover in Dallas when the shooting occurred.  According to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, Taff also has several other pending cases including violation of a protective order, threatening violent acts, stalking, and kidnapping.  He was identified as a high-risk prisoner.

Shortly after the incident, only one check-in counter at Gate C10 was closed, but there was no other impact to airport operations.  American Airlines confirmed flight delays, but no cancellations due to shooting.

Both the prisoner and the sheriff's deputy were taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment. The security checkpoint is scheduled to re-open Saturday.
