Firefighters Battle 4-Alarm Fire In Denton Square
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters in Denton battled a four-alarm fire in the historic downtown square.
Flames and heavy smoke could be seen from a building on Locust Street near Oak Street early Tuesday morning.
The fire was four alarms and affected at least six businesses along the east side of Denton Square.
There has been no word yet on a cause. There are currently no reported injuries.
Firefighters from across Denton County responded to help fight the fire.
The owner of the Jupiter House coffee shop told CBS 11 his business suffered water and smoke damage.
"We went inside Jupiter House... there's a lot of smoke and water damage. They busted through the ceiling. The firewall that separates the two buildings did a good job of protecting our structure," said Jupiter House owner Joey Hawkins.
Nearby apartments were evacuated in the morning until crews were able to get the flames under control.
"Right now, we have crews looking at the structure, making sure it is safe for investigators to go inside so that we can figure out the cause," said Denton Public Information Officer Jessica Rogers.
While he doesn't know the full extent of the damage to his coffee shop, Hawkins says he's grateful no one was inside the building.
"Nobody was hurt, so that's good. We will get through it," said Hawkins.
According to officials, Locust Street and Austin Street between Oak and Hickory Streets will be closed from 24 to 48 hours, so they are asking people in the area to be aware.
