DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A memorial to confederate soldiers in Denton was vandalized overnight.

Monday morning the words "This is Racist" were found spray-painted in red letters on the Denton County Confederate Soldier Memorial, located on the grounds of the Denton County Courthouse.

Work crews spent the morning removing the paint and trying to undo the damage.

Denton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sandi Brackeen said officials are assessing the situation and trying to find the culprits.

The memorial was a source of debate in the wake of last month's deadly church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Security was recently been stepped up around the memorial to confederate soldiers, that stands in the Denton Town Square. But Brackeen says they still weren't anticipating anything like this. "We were not of course. But you never know... that's why there are cameras."

Investigators are reviewing footage from those security cameras in hopes of finding the person/persons responsible.
