Denton Jailer Fired For Use Of Force Against Man

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) – An investigation into brutality at the Denton City Jail found that a jail employee used excessive force.

It happened on July 19, 2014 after Jason Wayne Bishop was arrested for Public Intoxication on Fry Street.

During the intake process Bishop was injured, an ambulance was summoned and he was taken to the hospital, treated, and released.

An on-duty Police supervisor initiated an inquiry into the incident and reviewed reports submitted by the jail staff involved. He notified his boss and a subsequent internal affairs investigation was opened which involved review of jail video and interviews with numerous Department employees.

The investigation found that during the jail intake procedure Bishop became argumentative when asked to submit to a property search.
When he refused to physically comply with verbal requests, Bishop was escorted from the booking area to a detox cell.

The results of the investigation conclusively indicate Bishop's injuries (see above) resulted from the misapplication of a take down technique known as a leg sweep, causing Bishop to crack his head on floor of the jail cell. No officers or jailers used any strikes, kicks, punches or weapons, according to the report.

That jailer responsible for the incident was fired.

All other Department employees including the initial arresting officer Clinton Webb, were exonerated by the investigation.

The Denton Police Department said it doesn't condone or tolerate the excessive use of force and all employees are expected to use only that force which is objectively reasonable in the course of affecting an arrest or handling an uncooperative person in custody.
