Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris Makes First Texas Campaign Appearance, Talks Mueller Report
GRAPEVINE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris called on Attorney General William Barr to release Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
"That report needs to be made public. The American people have a right and need to know. The underlying evidence that supports that report should be made public. Attorney General Barr should be called to testify under oath before the United States Congress."
About 400 people came to Grapevine to see the California Senator who answered questions from Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair Deborah Peoples.
When asked about healthcare, Harris referred to President Donald Trump's renewed criticism of the late Arizona Senator John McCain, who changed his mind and voted to save Obamacare, after he campaigned to repeal it. "The late great John McCain (clapping) put country above party. You will remember he said no."
Senator Harris brought Democrats to their feet when she said, "I know how to prosecute the case against Donald Trump."
She criticized President Donald Trump's expanded barrier or wall along the Texas-Mexico border as his "vanity project."
Harris called for a $6,000 tax credit for people who pay more than 30% of their income toward rent and utilities.
The former San Francisco DA and California Attorney General also said she is for legalizing recreational use of marijuana.
It's a crowded Democratic field feautring two Texans: former El Paso Congressman Beto O'Rourke, and former San Antonio Mayor and HUD Secretary Julian Castro, who campaigned in Dallas earlier this week.
Former Vice President Joe Biden will likely enter the race next month.
The Real Clear Politics average of polls for the Democratic nomination in the last month show Biden leading with 29%, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders with 23%, Harris with 10%, and O'Rourke with 8%.
Castro has 1%.
Senator Harris' appearance was her first in Texas.
She has a rally planned in Houston Saturday, and has already attracted support here in the Lone Star State.
Jill Rice of Richardson said, "She is a woman who will stand up for my rights. My rights as a woman, my rights as a LGBTQ woman, and I need somebody who is definitely in my corner."
Jayne Partridge flew here from her home in Olympia, Washington to see Harris. "She's a woman and I like that. She's a strong woman, and I like that. She's not just an old white guy and we seem to be getting a lot of them."
A Quinnipiac University poll released last month showed various hypothetical matchups in Texas.
President Trump led Biden 47-46%, led Sanders 47-45%, and O'Rourke 47-46%.
The President had a wider lead over Harris 48-41% and Castro 46-41%.
Harris left the event in Grapevine without taking any questions from reporters.
