Delta Airlines Moving Slowly After Worldwide Computer Outage

ATLANTA/DFW AIRPORT (CBSDFW.COM) - Delta Airlines is still trying to recover after a worldwide computer systems crash. Thousands of passengers are now stranded after Delta canceled some 300 flights.
As of 9:30 a.m. CST the airline was only operating 800 of its nearly 6,000 scheduled flights. The company said, "While systems are improving and flights are resuming, delays and cancellations continue."
Just before the lunch hour there were delays on more than 1,000 Delta flights.
Earlier this morning Delta issued the following update on the status of their systems:
"8:40 a.m. ET UPDATE: A Delta ground stop has been lifted and limited departures are resuming following a power outage in Atlanta that impacted Delta computer systems and operations worldwide. Cancellations and delays continue.
Customers heading to the airport should expect delays and cancellations. While inquiries are high and wait times are long, our customer service agents are doing everything they can to assist. There may also be some lag time in the display of accurate flight status at delta.com, the Fly Delta App and from Delta representatives on the phone and in airport."
At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, officials with Delta greeted early morning passengers with the news that no flights, anywhere, would be taking off.

The problems forced the carrier to delay or cancel all of its morning flights worldwide while teams frantically worked to fix the problem. Flights already in the air were and are reportedly operating normally.
Due to a computer outage, flights awaiting departure are currently delayed. Flights enroute are operating normally.

Confirmation of Monday's troubles were also confirmed in responses via Delta's Twitter account. The airline is live tweeting with passengers who are worried about their flights.

Officials with the company said IT systems were down "everywhere" and that "hopefully it won't be much longer." The computer issues are also affecting the company's website.
The technical issues for Delta are happening two and a half weeks after a computer outage grounded Southwest Airlines flights across the country. During that outage more than 2,000 flights were canceled.
With today's issues, all Delta Airlines customers are being advised to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

Delta Airlines operates out of at least six gates at DFW Airport and has more than two dozen flights daily. The carrier also runs flights to Atlanta out of Dallas Love Field Airport.
Delta said travelers can get a full refund if their flight is cancelled or "significantly" delayed. To help passengers get to their destinations, some people, flying on certain routes, will also be allowed to make a one-time change to their ticket free of charge.
