DALLAS (KRLD-AM) - Holiday shoppers are out Friday hunting for bargains - but not everyone is headed to the mall. Many are shopping in the Deep Ellum neighborhood in Dallas.

Live music is not the only thing the neighborhood has to offer. There are a growing number shops and restaurants in the neighborhood just east of downtown.

"We're a lifestyle store and we want to represent the urban lifestyle for people that live in Dallas, and there's no better place to do it than in Deep Ellum," said Brandon Ayala, owner of Epocha Shoe Gallery on Elm Street. "It's what I consider the heart of the Dallas culture".

That culture makes it an ideal neighborhood to sell vintage men's clothing and sneakers, said Ayala.

"One of our hidden gems is all the vintage clothes that we have in the back. A lot of nice vintage leather jackets...Members Only, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo... there's a lot of good things in here that you could buy for somebody," said Ayala. "The products that we have here still give you that nostalgia but it's in a better-elevated material, a better style."

A few blocks away, a new store called Jade and Clover is offering its own unique selection of clothes and gifts.

"It is a carefully curated lifestyle shop that features local artists as well as some national brands," said Sierra Sintic. "We are always very mindful and eco-conscious when selecting our items and artists we feature in the store."

She said the owner of Jade and Clover was attracted to Deep Ellum by the neighborhood's eclectic vibe.

"Because Deep Ellum is an entertainment district that's also very walkable. It attracts many different types of people and it's also very accepting."

In addition to its ecologically-conscious clothes and gifts, Jade and Clover features a "succulent bar" filled with plants.

"Our succulent bar is a place where you can bring a friend or just come by yourself and make your own terrarium of different sized vessels," Sintic said. "You pick the size vessel that you would like. It could be the shape of a pyramid or a sphere. It can hang or just sit on your desk. And then you pick your plants, your colored sand, your gemstones, colored flowers and such. It can go on forever."

The store also offers those through its website.

Other stores in Deep Ellum sell jewelry, furniture and even bicycles.
