DART Bus Driver Is Run Over And Dies

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus driver was hit and killed by another DART bus early Monday morning.

The accident happened at the northwest operating station on the Webb Chapel Extension, close to Bachman Lake.

The location is where buses are housed and drivers pick them up before their shifts.

According to a DART spokesman, the man was hit at around 5 a.m. He was taken to Parkland Hospital, but died about a half hour later. The name of the deceased bus driver has not been released, but CBS 11 News did learn he was 55-years-old and just started working as a driver last November.

The driver who hit the man is 35-years-old and has been with DART for 12 years. Company officials say the man has had a clean driving record. According to DART policy, the man was given a drug test and put on temporary leave.

DART police are investigating, but it's believed the incident is just an accident.

DART spokesman Mark Ball said, "We have hundreds of buses, hundreds of bus operators, as well as rail operators, and they're all hearing about it now. So, it saddens the agency obviously. We certainly don't want any of our customers to be hurt and we definitely don't want any of our employees to ever be hurt either."

Ball said all of the DART operators are a "tight-knit group" and that their strength was shown as they continued with their work Monday.
