DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A robbery outside of a Dallas grocery store ended in gunfire. The incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Aldi store located near the intersection of Forest Lane and Webb Chapel Road in northwest Dallas.

Police stated that a couple in their 60s or 70s was walking out of the store when they became the targets of a robbery. Early reports indicate that a gold necklace and other personal belongings were stolen. The couple said that the unidentified Latin male suspect then jumped into a vehicle and started to take off.

But the victim was armed with his own weapon, and he started shooting at his attacker.

The 36-year-old suspect was struck multiple times before reaching his vehicle. His car then ran into a parked car and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released because his next of kin has not yet been notified.

Meanwhile, the victim who fired shots has been identified as 71-year-old Ronnie Lummus. Investigators questioned the couple and other witnesses and determined that the shooting was an act of self-defense. The case will now be referred to a grand jury, which is standard procedure after such an incident.
