Dallas Psychology Grad Gives Tips For Those Returning To School

Le Shepard recently graduated with a master's degree from Texas Woman's University in counseling psychology. Her recent experience offers great insight for those considering a master's program in psychology.

Why did you pursue a master's degree?

"I ran a program for pregnant and parenting high school students for a non-profit organization. I absolutely loved that job but I felt like I would be able to make more of a difference if I had additional training and credentials."

What would you tell someone who is considering pursuing a master's degree?

"One of the most important things is to make sure that you find a program that fits you. I started in another program that just wasn't right for me. When I transferred, it felt like everything clicked. Each program has its own focus, requirements and personality. Take the time to find one that really meets your needs and prepares you for your future career. Several classmates chose practicum sites based on possible employment after school. They had jobs waiting for them when they graduated."

What was the biggest challenge you faced while pursuing your master's degree?

"My daughter was diagnosed with PCDH19 Epilepsy about half way through my program. I would take my school work with me everywhere we went and would study during therapy appointments, in doctors' waiting rooms, or any time a had a few free minutes. Trying to balance a chaotic family with the demands of graduate school was absolutely exhausting."

What was the biggest reward?

"Nothing compares to working with clients and seeing them change. It is absolutely amazing to see people make positive choices or start to heal and know that you had a part to play in that. It is great to have a degree with so many career possibilities. After I'm licensed, I can work independently as a counselor, in a school district, at a community agency or in a psychiatric hospital. Eventually, I would like to work with trafficking victims. I know that my training has prepared me for exciting work that will help a lot of people."
