DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Police have identified the man shot by police after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and vandalizing a car at Love Field as Shawn Diamond, 29.

Diamond is in stable condition after being shot around noon outside a terminal resulting in hours long delays for travelers at Love Field.

Dallas police say Diamond's ex-girlfriend agreed to drive him to the airport to catch a flight home to Maryland. On the way, she told officers, Diamond became angry and hit her. He'd been released from the Denton County Jail hours earlier.

Surveillance video at the airport shows her pulling his bags out of her car and appearing to toss clothes onto the streets. He can be seen grabbing a traffic cone and landscaping rocks and using them to break her car windows.  Dallas Police released the surveillance video of all of this Friday evening.

At the airport, an officer intervened to separate the two, drawing his gun.

A second officer pulled his Taser.

Police say Diamond had rocks in both hands, when video shows he charged both officers, prompting one to fire.

Diamond fell to the ground.

Ignoring the officer's warnings to "get down," the video shows Diamond made a run at them again and several more shots were fired.

"Witnesses reported that during the incident suspect Diamond made statements to the officer such as 'You are going to have to shoot me'," said Dallas Police Chief David Brown.

The scene played out in front of a crowded airport and within minutes cell phone video appeared online.

Investigators are still reviewing the use of deadly force, but Chief Brown says the video already made public tells much of the story.

"Some of the restraint the officers used, the tactics the officers used were quite appropriate," said Brown

Dimaond had just been arrested in Carrollton on Tuesday and charged with criminal mischief.

Carrollton Police say he was driving recklessly and crashed his car in the 3700 block of Marsh Lane. The crash destroyed $3,700 worth of trees owned by The City of Carrollton.

He was transferred from the Carrollton Jail to the Denton County Jail Thursday and was released Friday morning.

The officer who shot Diamond is on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

UPDATE: Shawn Diamond has been charged with Assault Family Violence and Aggravated Assault Public Servant.
