DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A police chase ended with a violent crash and violent confrontation in Lake Highlands Wednesday afternoon.

The driver, who police say stole a white Dodge Challenger, led them on a high speed chase on both directions of I-635, before he exited the freeway and crashed into a minivan shortly before 4 pm.

The crash itself was violent, as the minivan was stopped at a red light at the corner of Walnut Hill and Abrams.  The moments after the crash were just as violent, as the driver of the mini-van and her passenger jumped out of their vehicle, hit him several times, and held him for police.

Friends of the crash victims say the van's passengers included a mother, her husband , and their 13-year old son, who is a 7th grader at Forest Meadow Jr. High.  His grandmother says he was hurt "pretty bad" and scared.

The crash happened in a school zone, which was active at the time. Merriman Park Elementary is near the crash scene. The crossing guard who witnessed it called it "shocking."
