DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -School choice. It's a generic term being used a lot in education. In Dallas, there's an Oak Cliff School crafted under the choice concept.

400 students citywide choose DISD first designated choice school. New Tech High School, is now on the old Amaceo Smith High campus and teachers use technology i.e. laptops, graphics, digital media, as the teaching tools in classrooms.

Xephaknaih Dansby desired something different and he believes he found it here.

"This year I'm taking graphic design. After this year, I'll be a certified graphic designer.

For fellow student Joshua Deandra it's a simple concept. "The one thing that lures everyone is its fun work."

In 2010, Amaceo Smith High School Campus was shut down. Poor grades forced its closure. The current student body was attending middle school at that time. Now the campus has been repurposed as a new tech concept.

Four years later students apply for access to the school. 16-year old Deandra defines it as the opposite of his home high school.

"You're not bored watching a teacher lecture. Its fun work, and you learn from it. You're getting what you need into your noggin'," joked Deandra.

"You will hear them describe it as an opportunity to be in a school that offers a different chance, and a different feeling," said School Principal Lisa Deveaux.

This school is not just giving students a technology education, this school uses technology to teach education.

The old method failed on this campus. The new tech concept here, four years in, is moving forward.

One key ingredient, students made the choice to be here. New Tech is not a Magnet School.

Students from the Amaceo Smith neighborhood get first pick to attend but so far, few do.
