Dallas ISD Moves Forward On Home Rule Charter Process
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Board of Trustees for DISD spent hours in discussion at a called meeting Monday afternoon.
The board took no action in executive session, but voted 8-1 to hire a law firm to advise the district on matters related to a home rule charter.
Many board members expressed dissatisfaction in having to spend time on the issue of home rule, rather than focus on setting the budget for the next school year.
Board President Eric Cowan says the verification of the signatures on the home rule petition should be complete by Thursday.
Trustee Nancy Bingham estimated that close to $1 million in tax payer money would be spent on exploration of a home rule charter.
Trustee Carla Ranger suggested that thought was premature, and asked if the board could take a resolution on whether they support or are against the home rule district charter. The meeting ended without a vote on any other matter.
The Board of Trustees will select 11 of the 15 commissioners who will draft a charter, including eight parents.
The commission must also include four teachers, selected by a DISD advisory panel.
Thursday, the board will hear presentations from grassroots groups on both sides of the issue: Support Our Public Schools (in favor of charter) and Our Community, Our Schools (against charter).
