Dallas Health Care Student Has Benefited From An Online Degree
Yonwi Bell has utilized her education - a bachelor's degree in biology from Texas A&M University - to help others. From being a national and state licensed pharmaceutical technician, to a licensed benefits advisor, Bell has served in many roles. She currently acts as vice president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) for her campus, whose mission is to build an eminent cadre of people of color in science and technology.
Currently she is pursuing a master's degree in public administration and health care management from Keller Graduate School of Management.
Why did you decide to pursue your master's degree?
"Because of the changes that are happening in the health care industry with patient care, meeting quality standards and insurance payments, I wanted to be involved in the decision-making process in regards to health care management. My ultimate goal is to be involved at the federal level."
What are the benefits and challenges of pursuing an online education?
"The benefits allow for flexibility in the use of your time to study and work on assignments. When I was working two jobs, I was able to continue my studies. The challenges can be the workload. You have to be diligent with your management of time. The program I am in is very intense with eight-week blocks devoted to each class."
What would you tell others about going back to school?
"It is advantageous. I am able to apply the things I am learning in school to my job. I feel secure with the idea of acquiring a position in the future with my new skills. Look for positions where you can help create value in the lives of others instead of just making a paycheck. It is a global economy; one should look to expand themselves and education will help you do that."
