Dallas Graphic Artist Looks To Higher Education To Make Dreams A Reality
Jeremy Smith earned a bachelor's degree in art from Jackson State University, and aspires to be a college professor teaching graphic arts. Smith currently works at FedEx Office as a center consultant. He helps customers find solutions to their graphic design and printing projects.
Why are you considering returning to school to earn a master's degree?
"I thought I could make it with just a bachelor's degree, but it doesn't work that way. When I was in high school, it was impressed upon me to earn a bachelor's degree. I did and found out with my new bachelor's degree, I was working at Burger King. This wasn't the position of success that I wanted. While being at FedEx, I discovered how much I love teaching people. I teach customers how to use graphic design products so that they can make the items they need for a successful presentation. I love helping people show off their talents in a visual way. Now, I realize that I need a master's degree to do what I really want to do – teach computer-aided graphic design."
What do you think will be the biggest challenge in pursuing your master's degree?
"Paying for college while staying debt-free. I have been researching different schools. Graduate school is expensive. You still have to pay for rent, your bills and make sure you have something for life's little mishaps. I have no problem applying myself. I know I will excel in graduate school, but I do not want to go into debt to earn a master's degree."
What do you think will be the biggest reward for earning your master's degree?
"I will get to do want I really want to do – teach. Plus, in teaching, you learn. I believe in life-long learning. Technology brings so many advancements and I want to be on the forefront of knowledge to enable and empower students to create a door of endless possibilities."
