IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - Mo Claiborne has a new deal...and an old proclamation.

"I will be the best!'' the re-upped Cowboys cornerback says via social media.

"The best'' was the central idea back in 2012 when the LSU product — considered by many NFL people to be the best defensive player in that draft — was selected by a Dallas team that traded up to get him. Claiborne has never quite lived up to that billing, injuries being among the reasons.

Had the Cowboys considered Claiborne "the best,'' they would have activated the option on his fifth year before last season and kept him at around $11 million. Instead, they get the same player at a bargain. The one-year contract is announced at "$3 million that can go to $3.75 million'' but in reality features just a $1.25 million base and just $500,000 in a signing bonus … with the rest of his potential salary available in as-you-go bonuses.

"I just re-signed,'' Claiborne announced over the weekend, "with the Cowboys. A lot of haters, a lot of people, ain't gonna like that. But what can you do? Shout out to all the people who've been (riding) with me since Day 1. I will be the best!''

Claiborne's acknowledgement of his critics could serve as his motivation to be, if not "the best,'' at least "better.''
